Early College

Since 2019, LEAP for Education, MassHire North Shore Workforce Board, Salem High School, and Salem State University have partnered to run the Forten Scholars Early College Program. This program offers four free college credit-bearing courses to high school students in their junior and senior years.

Program Goals

  1. Succeed in College-Level Work - learn tips and strategies to help you with note taking, critical reading, and study skills
  2. Gain College Knowledge - learn about the college application and financial aid process
  3. Build your Portfolio - begin to draft college essays, resumes, and other items needed for your college applications
  4. Apply for Scholarships and Financial Aid -  take time every week to work on these documents with support and guidance from our staff

Fall Semester with High School Seniors: September 20 - December 13 Days: Mondays (not including Salem Public Schools holidays) Time: 11:42 PM - 1:36 PM Location: Salem High School   Spring Semester with High School Juniors: Begins Monday, January 24th Days: Mondays (not including Salem Public Schools holidays) Time: 1:40PM - 2:35PM Location: Salem High School

Program Design

Our supportive staff, volunteers. and interns help students in beginning their journey to:
  • Explore college and career options
  • Complete college applications and FAFSA

Topics for Juniors

High School Junior topics include:
  • Introduction to college application and financial aid terminology
  • Financial literacy, budgeting, and scholarship search
  • College and/or post-secondary research including campus visits
  • College application essay draft

Topics for Seniors

High School Senior topics include: 
  • General overview of the college application and financial aid processes
  • Aid with filling out college and/or post-secondary applications
  • Assistance in completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Student Eligibility

LEAP’s class during the school day at SHS is only open to participants in the Forten Scholar Early College Program. See your guidance counselor to apply to the program.
